5 Safety Tips For Above Ground Pools

by Anton Leinonen

Being able to make the most of the warmer months is ideal. This may mean having a pool in your backyard that will allow you to get the most enjoyment out of life. One of the less expensive types is an above ground pool. By knowing specific safety tips to put to use, these can allow you to have fun and prevent various accidents from occurring.

Tip #1: Use Non-slip Materials

One danger of being around the pool of any type is having a slip and fall accident. You can work to prevent the possibility of this by using non-slip materials in some of the most commonly used areas. Be sure to put this material type on pool decks, ladders, and the diving board for safety at all times.

Tip #2: Hire an Electrician

If you have lights around your pool, it's important to hire a licensed professional to install these for you. This can ensure all of the requirements and safety codes are followed which may help prevent any electrical injuries from occurring.

Additionally, be sure to keep lights and any electrical outlets at least a few feet away from the pool.

Tip #3: Install Rails and Guards

Be sure to put safety guards around the outside of the pool. This will allow you and any of your visitors to have a place to hold on to if necessary. Installing rails can also be helpful in preventing falling injuries and accidents that could occur.

Tip #4: Rely on Proper Supervision

It's important never to let a person swim alone in the pool. Be sure there are at least two people in the pool at any time and at least one of these should know how to swim.

Before allowing any neighborhood children in your pool, check to see if a parent can accompany this individual before granting access to your pool.

Tip #5: Have a First-Aid Kit On hand

In the event of any minor injuries, such as cuts or scrapes, be sure to have first-aid kit within reach. This kit should include bandages, gauzes, iodine and scissors at the bare minimum.

First-aid kits are fairly inexpensive, and you can typically purchase one for $10-$50.

The benefits of having an above ground pool in your backyard include having a lot of summer fun. However, it's important to put safety first at all times. Consider enlisting the help of your pool contractor to make your pool as safe as possible!
