4 Must-Know Hot Tub Maintenance Tips For Beginners

by Anton Leinonen

Whether you've recently ordered a new hot tub or have purchased a home that's outfitted with one, it's important to stay on top of care and maintenance. Like swimming pools, hot tubs require a fair amount of daily maintenance to keep them sanitary and enjoyable to use. Not sure where to begin when it comes to caring for your new hot tub? There are a few must-know maintenance tips to keep in mind.

Check Your Water Regularly

Keeping chemical levels in your hot tub properly balanced is a must. Unfortunately, maintaining this balance is easier said than done — and you'll likely find yourself needing to add chemicals regularly. Checking your hot tub's water regularly using a simple test strip is the easiest way to stay on top of things; these strips can tell you when you need to add more chlorine, bromine, and other chemicals.

Keep It Covered

Leaving your hot tub uncovered when not in use is an invitation for dirt and other unwanted debris to end up in the water, which can further throw off the delicate chemical balance. Investing in a quality hot tub cover is a smart decision and will keep debris out of your hot tub, making maintenance easier on you. A cover can also help to maintain the right water temperature to save money on your energy bills!

Toss In a Tennis Ball

Ideally, you should be rinsing off any lotions and hair products with a quick shower before you enter your hot tub. This will help to preserve the chemical balance and protect your hot tub from damage. However, it's not a bad idea to throw a couple of tennis balls into your hot tub too; the fibers on tennis balls can soak up oils and other product residues that would otherwise end up in your water.

Drain and Clean as Needed

While you shouldn't have to completely drain your hot tub often, it's generally not a bad idea to drain it for a deep cleaning once a year. This will allow you to scrub the walls of your hot tub and sanitize things thoroughly. In between deep cleanings, it's also a good idea to wipe down the surfaces of your tub weekly and to vacuum or skim debris out of the water daily.

A little care goes a long way in keeping your hot tub sanitary and well maintained, so be sure to keep these basic tips in mind!
